1549 Thomas Matthew / William Tyndale

A leaf from the earliest available printing of “Tyndale’s Bible.” William Tyndale was the first to translate the scriptures directly into English from the original Biblical Hebrew and Greek. This 1549 reprinting by John Rogers (aka “Thomas Matthew”) of the 1537 edition is over 470 years old. These large folio-sized leaves, printed on 100% rag cotton paper, measure approximately 12″ tall by 7.5″ inches wide, and each leaf is a unique piece of ancient artwork, carefully produced one-at-a-time, using a movable-type press. Each comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

They are the second printing of the Bible to be directly translated from the original Biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek straight into English. Tyndale Bible leaves, indeed any English Bible leaves printed in the first half of the 1500s, are rapidly disappearing from the market.

1551 Erasmus-Stephanus Latin/Greek

To our knowledge, these extremely historically important leaves have never been offered for sale by anyone at any time, and every collector of Bible leaves will surely want one. We have secured a fragment of the 1551 “Latin-Greek-Latin” New Testament of Erasmus, published by Robert “Stephanus” Estienne. One of the most important books ever printed; it is the first printed scripture with modern verse divisions!

1555 Stephanus Latin Bible The First With Numbered Verses

The first Latin Bible to be printed with verse numeration is known in modern Bibles. (The Stephanus versification first appears in any Bible in his 1553 French Bible, Darlow and Moule #3719, Van Eys #70.) Latin text here follows the Stephanus printings of 1538-40 and 1546. Text in double columns with references, variants, and section letters in the margins. The beginning of each verse is marked by a pillcrow (paragraph mark) followed by its number. In the Old Testament books of the Hebrew Canon, Stephanus adopted the already existing system of verse division but added numbers; in the New Testament here, he follows his own 1551 Greek New Testament versification and numeration.
